The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has dismissed reports circulating on social media that the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) is no longer a requirement for admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions.
In a statement issued on Thursday, JAMB’s Director of Public Affairs and Protocol, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, described the claim as false, malicious, and misleading.
According to the statement, a report published by Phonix.browser.com on October 16, 2025, falsely claimed that the Minister of Education, Dr. Mauruf Alausa, had announced that the UTME would no longer be a prerequisite for admission.
Dr. Benjamin firmly denied the allegation, clarifying that the Minister had made no such pronouncement. He explained that the purported statement—titled “Renewed Hope in Action: Federal Government Streamlines Admission Requirements to Expand Access to Tertiary Education”—was deliberately misrepresented.
“The information is malicious and preposterous, as the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Mauruf Alausa, has at no point made such a pronouncement,” the statement read.
JAMB further emphasized that the federal government’s education reforms aim to improve access to tertiary education, not abolish the UTME as a statutory requirement.
“We therefore call on the general public to disregard the unfounded information and note that JAMB will continue to discharge its statutory duties in line with its enabling laws,” the statement added.
