The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Jigawa State Council, has organised a one-day public lecture on Cybersecurity and Digital Awareness, aimed at enhancing the digital safety and media literacy of journalists.
The event, held in Dutse, was jointly organised by the Office of the Special Assistant to the Governor on ICT and Digital Economy and the Jigawa State Digital Security Ambassador, as part of the National Cybersecurity Awareness Initiative under the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).
In his welcome address, Comrade Ismaila Ibrahim Dutse, Chairman of NUJ Jigawa State Council, underscored the crucial role journalists play in safeguarding information and upholding truth in today’s fast-evolving digital space.
He called for stronger collaboration and continuous training for media professionals, saying, “I appeal for more partnership with NUJ to enhance effective information dissemination and improve journalists’ capacity in digital reporting.”
Comrade Dutse urged participants to take advantage of the training to promote safe digital practices and contribute to building a secure online environment. He commended Hon. Murtala Lawan Kazaure, Special Assistant to the Governor on ICT and Digital Economy, for initiating the programme, and called for sustained partnership between NUJ and the Governor’s Office in ICT capacity building.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Kazaure explained that the training was specifically designed for NUJ members, focusing on Cybersecurity, Digital Hygiene, and Safe Information Practices. He noted that journalists play a vital role in shaping public opinion and must therefore be equipped to protect information systems and promote responsible digital engagement.
Kazaure assured NUJ members that the Jigawa State Government would organise a series of ICT and digital economy workshops in which journalists would actively participate.
The lecture also featured presentations by Bashir Abba and Sadiq Maiyaji, who shared practical insights on cybersecurity measures, online privacy, and responsible digital communication.
