Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has commended the outcomes of the AGRIGHAR Scoping Study, conducted across ten local government areas, which culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the state government and the India-based agribusiness firm.
The governor described the findings as a major step toward empowering rural communities through inclusive, women-led, and technology-driven agriculture.
Speaking during a meeting with the AGRIGHAR India delegation led by Dr. Sowmini Sunkara on Saturday, Governor Namadi praised the team for the depth and professionalism of the two-week study.
“This study reflects our vision for agricultural transformation, and the dedication shown by your team gives us confidence that you are a true partner in progress,” he said.
The AGRIGHAR team assessed key value chains—including rice, groundnut, cassava, hibiscus, dairy, and fisheries—and engaged local stakeholders to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement.
Governor Namadi noted that the proposals align perfectly with his administration’s agricultural development agenda, aimed at positioning Jigawa as a major hub for agribusiness in Nigeria and beyond.
“By 2030, Jigawa will be recognised not only in Nigeria but globally for the quality of our agricultural products,” he affirmed.
Key Initiatives from the AGRIGHAR Scoping Study
Establishment of agribusiness incubation clusters in key LGAs to support youth and women entrepreneurs.
Revival of dormant processing centres in Jahun, Gidan Ara, and Kila Ward through Public-Private Partnership (PPP) models.
Strengthening market linkages between Jigawa producers and Kano markets for sesame, hibiscus, rice, dairy, and fish.
Deployment of solar-powered processing systems and modern packaging to boost product competitiveness.
Enhancement of cooperative governance, branding, and value addition to improve rural incomes.
Dr. Sowmini Sunkara said the project seeks to create sustainable livelihoods and establish Jigawa as a model state for inclusive agribusiness development in Nigeria.
“Our field visits revealed strong enthusiasm among local farmers and stakeholders, who are eager to innovate and grow,” she stated.
Governor Namadi reaffirmed his administration’s readiness to commence implementation immediately.
“We are ready to begin this transformative partnership without delay. The foundation has been laid, and Jigawa is prepared to take the next steps,” he assured.
The governor also commended AGRIGHAR’s grassroots engagement during the study, adding that the farmers’ enthusiasm demonstrated strong local ownership of the initiative.
“The way your team interacted with our people showed their willingness to collaborate. Their excitement assures me that we are on the right path,” he said.
