Dignitaries from across Africa, Asia, and the Arab world converged on the Emir’s Palace in Balanga, Gombe State, for a historic occasion—the turbaning of Dr. Umar Aliyu Shayi as the First Jamin Waja of the Balaa Waja Kingdom.

The Emirate Council, in an official statement, described the title as one of great significance, conferred in recognition of Dr. Shayi’s outstanding commitment and courageous efforts in combating banditry, terrorism, and other criminal activities in Nigeria and beyond. It also confirmed that this is the first time such a prestigious and strategic title has been bestowed in the kingdom’s history.

The ceremony drew large crowds, including the Commander of the Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Service, notable traditional rulers, security chiefs, and prominent personalities from various parts of the world. The event further underscored the respect and recognition Dr. Shayi commands for his contributions to national and regional security.

Before his turbaning, Dr. Shayi held various leadership roles including Director-General of the Bauchi State Vigilante and Youth Empowerment Agency, Commander of the Police Constabulary Unit in Bauchi, and Senior Special Assistant on Security Matters to Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State. He is also the holder of over 20 traditional titles conferred upon him in acknowledgment of his selfless service.

Dr. Shayi is widely celebrated for his fearless disposition and hands-on approach in tackling security challenges across Sub-Saharan Africa. His efforts have focused on eliminating terrorism, banditry, cattle rustling, phone snatching, and other criminal vices that threaten communities.

Professor Graham Prescott, Head of the Global Centre for the Fight Against Terrorism in London, described Dr. Shayi as a rare gem with exceptional qualities and an unwavering commitment to the security of the African continent. He commended Governor Bala Mohammed for appointing Dr. Shayi to such strategic roles, and also applauded the efforts of conventional and non-conventional security agencies in Nigeria for their professionalism and adoption of global best practices in counterterrorism operations.

Professor Prescott further noted that the London-based Centre is dedicated to supporting global policing through intelligence gathering and international cooperation aimed at eliminating terrorism in all its forms.

The turbaning of Dr. Umar Aliyu Shayi as Jamin Waja marks not only a personal achievement but also a symbolic milestone that reflects the importance of traditional institutions in recognizing and reinforcing efforts toward peace and security across Africa.
