Former presidential aide and social commentator, Reno Omokri, has questioned the recent claim by United States Senator Ted Cruz alleging that a genocide is being carried out against Christians in Nigeria.
Omokri, in a statement shared on his social media handles, challenged Senator Cruz to substantiate his allegations by identifying the Nigerian officials he claimed were responsible for the supposed persecution of Christians.
Citing the composition of Nigeria’s current military leadership, Omokri pointed out that the Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff, and the Inspector General of Police are all Christians, while only the Chief of Air Staff is a Muslim.
“Three out of four service chiefs are Christians. Only the Chief of Air Staff is a Muslim. Given these facts, can Senator Ted Cruz help Nigeria out by naming and shaming the officials he claims are facilitating a genocide against Christians?” Omokri asked.
He argued that the structure of Nigeria’s security leadership contradicts any suggestion of state-sponsored targeting of Christians, describing such claims as misleading and damaging to Nigeria’s international image.
Omokri further urged foreign politicians and commentators to verify facts before making statements that could inflame religious tensions or misrepresent the realities of Nigeria’s complex security challenges.
Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican lawmaker from Texas, had earlier accused Nigerian authorities of failing to protect Christians from targeted attacks, a statement that sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians and observers.
Analysts say Omokri’s comments reflect a broader concern among Nigerians about the growing influence of foreign narratives on the country’s domestic religious and political issues.
