President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring fairness among all religious groups in Nigeria, assuring Christians in the North that his administration remains dedicated to promoting unity and equity across the nation.
The President gave the assurance on Saturday during a meeting with Christian leaders at the headquarters of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) in Jos, Plateau State.
“I have a mission to unite this country and ensure its prosperity, and we are making progress,” Tinubu declared, emphasizing his administration’s resolve to heal divisions and strengthen national cohesion.
Tinubu also paid tribute to the late Madam Lydia Yilwatda, mother of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Professor Nantawe Yilwatda, who passed away at the age of 83.
Describing the late matriarch as a devoted mother and humanitarian, the President said:
“In our family, we have a strong Muslim background, and I married a Christian—a pastor for that matter. I have never forced her to change her religion. As leaders, we must manage religious issues for the benefit of all.”
He urged Christian leaders to maintain faith in his government’s efforts, assuring them that his administration is taking concrete steps to address insecurity, terrorism, and banditry.
“We are defeating bandits, and we will defeat them completely. We will deal with them and also tackle the farmers-herders clashes,” he said, adding that his administration is revamping the economy for the benefit of all Nigerians.
At the funeral service held in Jos, Tinubu reflected on his past political engagements in the city and expressed gratitude to God for the opportunity to serve as Nigeria’s President.
“I am grateful to be here today to bid farewell to a mother of the community and a humanitarian,” he said.
The APC National Chairman, Professor Nantawe Yilwatda, described his late mother as a resilient woman who lived on medication for 47 years but remained active in supporting her family and community.
“My mother worked tirelessly despite her health challenges. I thank God for her life and for the President’s support,” he said.
Reverend Dr. Amos Mohzo, President and Spiritual Leader of COCIN, thanked President Tinubu for recognizing and appointing Northern Christians to strategic national positions, citing examples such as Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, and APC National Chairman, Professor Yilwatda.
He also appealed to the President to assist victims of conflicts in Plateau and Benue States and facilitate the safe return of displaced Christian communities from Borno and Adamawa who fled to Cameroon due to insurgency.
Dr. Mohzo pledged the church’s continued support for the Tinubu administration and its Renewed Hope Agenda.
The funeral was attended by several high-profile dignitaries, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume.
Also present were former governors Tanko Al-Makura (Nasarawa), Adamu Mu’azu (Bauchi), Fidelis Tapgun (Plateau), Yahaya Bello (Kogi), and Rochas Okorocha (Imo), alongside other top government officials and party stalwarts.
