The Federal Fire Service (FFS) has formally closed the 2025 National Fire Week in Zaria with strong calls for increased public awareness and compulsory household safety measures to curb the menace of fire outbreaks across Kaduna State.
The FFS Zaria Area Commander, ACF Aminu Ahmad Kiyawa, said the week-long programme was designed to educate communities on the dangers of fire and the proper procedures for preventing and managing fire incidents before and during emergencies.
Kiyawa explained that the objective of the event was “to draw the attention of the public to the hazards of fire and the measures required to extinguish it.” He added that the National Fire Week successfully engaged residents, institutions, and relevant agencies on how to reduce fire risks through proactive safety practices.
The Dean of Student Affairs, Muhammad Ibn El-Barau College of Nursing Science, Hajiya Fatima Hassan El-Bature, commended the FFS for providing the school with firefighting equipment and continuous safety training. She noted that qualified candidates were encouraged to apply for fully accredited nursing programmes at the college, adding that this year's closing ceremony was conducted at a high standard.
Representing the Emir of Zazzau, the Garkuwan Ayyukan Zazzau, Engr. Ibrahim Balarabe Musa, praised the FFS for uniting stakeholders to address the recurring challenges of fire outbreaks.
He urged the Kaduna State Government to make it compulsory for every household and civil servant to own a fire extinguisher. He reminded participants that “fire is not friendly,” and stressed that while the fire service is doing an excellent job, “we pray never to need their services.”
As part of the closing activities, the Federal Fire Service conducted a hands-on practical demonstration for students on how to extinguish fire using a fire extinguisher and a fire blanket. Officers were also honoured for their outstanding dedication and service.
Stakeholders present at the event included representatives of the Emir of Zazzau, FRSC, Hisbah, KADVIS, NSCDC, NARTO, the Red Cross, the Basic School of Health and Technology, and other partner organisations.
