Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso Urges Unity as Trump Designates Nigeria a ‘Country of Particular Concern’

Former Kano State Governor and presidential candidate, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, has expressed concern over recent remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who designated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” over alleged religious persecution.

In a statement personally signed by him, Kwankwaso said Nigeria remains a sovereign nation whose citizens are facing insecurity caused by outlaws across different regions, not by religious or ethnic divisions. He noted that violence in the country affects Nigerians irrespective of faith or political affiliation.

The former governor called on the United States to support Nigeria with advanced technology and intelligence tools to help address insecurity rather than issuing statements that could further polarize the nation. According to him, constructive partnership, not external pressure, would help Nigeria overcome its challenges.

Kwankwaso also urged the federal government to appoint special envoys and permanent ambassadors to strengthen diplomatic engagement with the U.S. and other nations. He said Nigeria must be proactive in defending its image and interests on the global stage through strategic diplomacy.

Calling for national unity, he appealed to Nigerians to rise above religious and political divisions and embrace collective responsibility in safeguarding peace and development. “This is an important moment where we should emphasise unity of belonging over division. God bless Nigeria,” he concluded.
