Senator Simon Bako Lalong has praised the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Alumni Association for its contributions to national development, describing alumni groups as critical partners in strengthening unity, education, and economic growth.
The former Plateau State Governor made the remark while delivering the 18th Pre-Annual General Meeting (AGM) Lecture of the ABU Alumni Association for 2025, held at the university’s main auditorium in Zaria.
Lalong said alumni networks serve not only as beneficiaries of educational institutions but also as influential nation-builders whose expertise and reach help strengthen public institutions, mentor young people, and promote national cohesion. He noted that when alumni embrace their roles as leaders and ambassadors of unity, they can champion peace and sustainable development across the country.
He emphasized that the legacy of ABU continues to shape education, social values, and public conduct in Nigeria, stressing that it is the responsibility of alumni to ensure that this legacy serves as a platform for positive transformation. Lalong called for deeper commitment to building a united, peaceful, and prosperous Nigeria, where education remains the bedrock of progress and good governance.
In his remarks, the Minister of Defence and chairman of the event, Alhaji Badaru Abubakar, expressed delight at what he described as “a return home,” thanking the organizers for the warm reception. He said the Federal Government is making significant progress in restoring security nationwide. According to him, many areas once plagued by Boko Haram insurgents, bandits, and kidnappers have witnessed improved stability as the Armed Forces continue to record successes.
Badaru assured Nigerians that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration remains committed to addressing the country’s security challenges and safeguarding lives and property.
Also speaking, the Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Professor Ahmed Adamu, commended the alumni for their loyalty and contributions to the institution, noting that their commitment continues to strengthen the university’s image.
Earlier, the National President of the ABU Alumni Association, Malam Adamu Mamma Kontagora (Barden Kontagora), expressed gratitude for the successful organization of the Pre-AGM Lecture. He said the attendance of senior public figures, including the Defence Minister, Senator Lalong, and the Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, was a great honour to the association.
He welcomed all members to the 2025 Annual General Meeting.
The event was conducted peacefully and concluded successfully.
