In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

All praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. May the good end be for the pious people. Peace be upon Muhammad, His Messenger and His Servant, and upon his wives and offspring just like He sent His peace upon Prophet Ibrahim and his family. May Allah bless Prophet Muhammad, his wives, and offspring just like He blessed Prophet Ibrahim and his family. He (Glorified be He) is indeed Praiseworthy and Glorious.

Dear brothers and sisters! 'Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal wakil' is a great, powerful and very strong verse from the noble Qur'an which encourages us to rely only on Allah to protect, help and guide us to what is best for us.

Prophet Ibrahim (AS) said this statement when he was catapulted into the fire by the enemies of truth!

Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) also said it when:

"The people (i.e. hypocrites) said: "Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them." But it [merely] increased them in faith, and they said, 'Hasbunallahu wa Ni'mal Wakil." [Qur'an, 3:173]

In Arabic, 'Hasbunallahu wa ni’mal wakil' means “Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs.“

This is verse 173 from Surah Ali-Imran in the noble Qur’an.

Respected brothers and sisters! 'Hasbunallahu wa ni’mal wakil' can be said at any time, but it is often said in times of difficulty, or when we are making or awaiting the outcome of a decision, such as a court judgement, an attacks from the enemies, etc.

It may also be said when we are dealing with matters beyond our power, beyond our control, going through a life change, or when we are faced with unexpected circumstances.

Fellow brothers and sisters! Saying 'Hasbunallahu wa ni’mal wakil' reminds us that we have no control over our affairs, and that it is only Allah Almighty who has all power, knowledge and wisdom of everything.

This is a very reassuring concept, showing us that we do not need to bear all of the responsibility for a decision, as Allah is the ultimate decider.

It should also make us feel less helpless when we face difficult circumstances, as we know that Allah is capable of changing our conditions in an instance.

Having faith in the Qur'anic verse ‘Hasbunallahu wa ni’mal wakil’ can help to bring hope, strength and peace to our hearts and lives.

This Qur'anic verse also encourages us to simply trust in Allah Almighty’s decree, and to turn to Him alone for protection and help.

As a great and a very powerful Qur'anic verse, many Muslims believe that reciting ‘Hasbunallahu wa ni’mal wakil’ can help to change the outcome of one’s affairs, and can help to remove difficulties.

As mentioned above, Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said 'Hasbunallahu wa ni’mal wakil' when they were faced with adversity, animosity, hatred and enmity. They relied on the power of Allah Almighty to relieve them of difficult circumstances.

Prophet Ibrahim (AS) was thrown into the fire as punishment of the people of Babylon as he did not believe in worshipping idols. Although this seemed like a futile situation, Prophet Ibrahim (AS) relied on the power of Allah Almighty to escape the fire, and was not harmed.

"When (Prophet) Ibrahim was thrown into the fire, he said: “Allah (Alone) is sufficient for us. So did Messenger of Allah, Muhammad (Peace be upon him), when he was told: “A great army of the pagans had gathered against him, so fear them.” But this (warning) only increased him and the Muslims in Faith and they said: “Allah (Alone) is sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us)." [Bukhari]

Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) also encouraged his companions to recite 'Hasbunallahu wa ni’mal wakil' to help relieve their distress at the mention of the Day of Judgement.

Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) also recited this verse when a large army gathered against him and his companions:

“A great army is gathering against you, therefore, fear them,” but it only increased their faith and they said: “Allah is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer (of affairs, for us)." [Bukhari]
