Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, has called on private universities across Nigeria to adopt the developmental model and academic standards exemplified by North-Eastern University (NEU), Gombe).

Jega made the call on Thursday during a courtesy visit to the institution, where he was received by the Pro-Chancellor and Founder, Dr. Sani Jauro; the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Yusuph Amuda Yahaya; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Sani Isyaka; the Registrar, Hauwa Abubakar; and other senior management staff.

Welcoming the former INEC boss to the Council Chamber, Dr. Jauro expressed profound appreciation for the visit and outlined NEU’s mission, progress in academic development, its strong research culture and its commitment to becoming one of Nigeria’s leading private universities. He emphasised the University’s focus on quality education, innovation and the moral development of students.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Isyaka, followed with a concise presentation that captured NEU’s academic growth, its expanding research and innovation capacity, its emphasis on employability and practical skills for students, and its international partnerships across Asia, Europe and Africa. He explained that these areas form the pillars of the University’s long-term strategic vision and institutional strength.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Yahaya described Jega’s commendation as “a powerful encouragement and a strong validation of NEU’s academic and institutional trajectory.” He reaffirmed the University’s commitment to strengthening research output, maintaining high-quality standards and consolidating NEU’s reputation as a model for tertiary institutions in the country.

In his remarks, Professor Jega expressed deep admiration for the University’s infrastructure, serene academic atmosphere and forward-looking vision. He noted that while many private universities prioritise profit, NEU is clearly built on a foundation of purpose, excellence and national development. He urged private and public universities alike to learn from NEU’s approach of prioritising student development, research productivity and practical learning.

Dr. Jauro later led Jega on a tour of the institution’s advanced facilities, including the Centre for African Medicinal Plant Research (CAMPRE), which Jega described as a “world-class” scientific research facility unmatched in many Nigerian universities. The tour continued at the Anas Aremeyaw Anas Multimedia, Content Creation & Innovation Centre, where Jega was interviewed inside the University’s modern television studio.

He encouraged NEU to remain consistent, deepen its strengths and continue producing graduates equipped to address contemporary societal challenges.

The visit concluded with photographs and renewed assurances from NEU’s management of their unwavering commitment to advancing high-quality education in Nigeria.
