The Patriots for the Advancement of Peace and Social Development has hailed the appointment and confirmation of General Christopher Musa as Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, describing him as the “right man for the job.”

Its Executive Director, Dr. Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, in a statement on Friday, commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he called a “wise and strategic choice,” noting that the decision reflects the President’s commitment to ending terrorism and armed banditry across the country.

Shinkafi, however, demanded the immediate dismissal of the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, alleging that he lacks the experience to handle complex national security matters and accusing him of having shown sympathy for bandits in the past.

He further advocated for the scrapping of the office of Minister of State for Defence, arguing that it is unnecessary and amounts to an aberration within the military command structure.

According to the group, Nigeria’s security landscape remains daunting, with challenges such as terrorism, insurgency, banditry, militancy, secessionist threats, and kidnapping for ransom posing serious threats to national stability. The organisation expressed confidence that the armed forces, under capable leadership, can safeguard the nation’s sovereignty if adequately funded, equipped, and motivated.

The group reiterated that General Musa’s appointment is a testament to his “patriotism, professionalism, and integrity,” insisting that the Defence Ministry should be led by individuals with proven military credentials.

It also criticised previous defence appointments of Mohammed Badaru Abubakar and Bello Matawalle, saying they lacked the requisite expertise to coordinate the armed forces effectively.

Shinkafi urged Nigerians to support President Tinubu and General Musa in the collective pursuit of national security, unity, and prosperity, stressing that only a united front can help Nigeria overcome its security challenges and “make the country great again.”
