The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has announced plans to position itself as a hub for electric vehicle (EV) education and training in Nigeria.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Olufemi Peters, disclosed this during a courtesy visit by an electric motor company, which pledged to donate electric vehicles to the institution.
Professor Peters said NOUN is well placed to serve as a centre for electric vehicle training and education, particularly at the technical and vocational levels. He noted that with major automobile manufacturers expected to begin importing electric vehicles into the country, there will be an increasing demand for skilled personnel to maintain and service them.
According to him, the partnership with the electric motor company represents a significant step towards preparing Nigerians for the future of transportation.
Welcoming the collaboration, the Vice-Chancellor expressed optimism that the initiative would enhance capacity building and strengthen Nigeria’s readiness for the emerging electric vehicle industry.
Earlier, the Chief Executive Officer of the Electric Motor Company, Prince Mustapha Audu, presented one of the donated electric vehicles to the university and assured that a second vehicle would be delivered within a week.
Prince Audu described electric vehicles as the future of transportation, citing the global shift towards sustainable energy and plans by many countries to phase out combustion engine vehicles by 2030.
He said his company is committed to building the capacity of young Nigerians in electric vehicle technology and services, not only for Nigeria but also for the African market.
According to him, electric vehicles are cheaper to acquire and maintain, while also offering significant benefits in reducing pollution and carbon emissions from the transportation sector.
Also speaking, the Director of the Centre for Human Resource Development at NOUN, Professor Aminu Umar, expressed excitement over the partnership, noting that the university’s extensive national reach would be leveraged to advance electric vehicle education and infrastructure development.
He added that NOUN is strategically positioned to play a leading role in promoting sustainable transportation and reducing carbon emissions in the country.
The collaboration between NOUN and the electric motor company is seen as a major milestone in Nigeria’s transition to electric vehicles, as the country prepares for an increased adoption of clean and sustainable transport solutions.
