A suicide bomber on Friday evening attacked the Gambarou Jumu’at Mosque in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, leaving several worshippers feared dead.
Witnesses said the attacker slipped into the mosque during the Maghrib congregational prayer and detonated an explosive device shortly after the first raka’at began.
“The bomber detonated when the first raka’at of the Maghrib prayer was observed. Many worshippers died and others sustained injuries,” one survivor recounted.
Emergency responders were yet to release official casualty figures at the time of filing this report.
No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. However, suspicion is likely to fall on the Boko Haram insurgent group, which has carried out multiple suicide bombings in the region in recent months.
Security agencies have cordoned off the area while investigations continue.
