Exactly ten years ago, in December 2015, the Nigerian military carried out a brutal attack on followers of the Islamic movement in Zaria, killing hundreds under the pretext of ‘blocking the road’ for the Chief of Army Staff.
Shehu Sani described the killings as a massacre: “Many people cheered while unarmed children and women were slaughtered. Some even marched over the corpses and stole valuables from the victims. Their bodies were later buried in mass graves.” He emphasised that such an atrocity would not have been tolerated elsewhere in the country, regardless of ideological, religious, or political differences. “Few of us dared to speak against it, but the evidence is available on the internet,” he said.
Drawing a contrast with the 2020 #EndSARS protests at Lagos’ Lekki Toll Gate, where security forces were widely condemned for killing peaceful protesters, Sani noted that while the Lekki attack received nationwide and global outrage, the Zaria massacre largely went unchallenged.
He concluded: “When you accept and tolerate the injustice done against your own people, you should not meddle in or fault those who resist the injustice done against them.”
The former senator shared this statement on his official social media handle to mark the anniversary and remind Nigerians of the unaddressed injustices in Zaria.
