No fewer than 250 senior citizens in Bauchi State have benefited from a N50 million financial support package under the 'Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme' (RHIESS), chaired by the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
Each beneficiary received N200,000 during the launch of the third edition of the Elderly Support Scheme, held on Tuesday at the Dr. Rilwanu Sulaiman Adamu Square, Government House, Bauchi as part of the Renewed Hope Initiative's Social Investment Programme.
Speaking during the presentation of the support, the North-East Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Initiative and First Lady of Bauchi State, Dr. Aisha Bala Mohammed, reaffirmed the federal government's commitment to improving the welfare and well-being of senior citizens across the country.
She explained that the beneficiaries in Bauchi included elderly citizens as well as retired personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces and the Nigeria Police, noting that the intervention was designed to enhance their quality of life and provide financial relief.
According to her, the scheme targets 250 elderly persons in each of the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, alongside selected retired security personnel nationwide.
Dr. Aisha Bala noted that the programme, themed 'Finding Joy in Old Age,' is aimed at restoring hope, dignity, and comfort to elderly Nigerians during their later years.
Represented by the wife of the Bauchi State Deputy Governor, Hajiya Asma'u Muhammad Jatau, she stated that the initiative underscores the Federal Government's resolve to ensure that senior citizens are not neglected but are supported to live fulfilling and dignified lives.
She further explained that the Renewed Hope Initiative, coordinated by the Wife of the President and National Coordinator, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is anchored on the principles of compassion, social inclusion, and collective responsibility, especially towards citizens who have rendered selfless service to the nation.
Aisha Bala assured beneficiaries of sustained support and stronger collaboration in advancing policies and programmes that promote the welfare of elderly persons in Bauchi State and across Nigeria.
She also commended the Bauchi State Government for its support and partnership, which contributed to the successful implementation of the programme.
Beneficiaries expressed profound gratitude for the assistance, describing it as timely and impactful in meeting their daily needs while restoring dignity and renewed joy in their lives.
The Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS) remains one of the flagship programmes of the Renewed Hope Initiative, dedicated to improving the lives of women, children, and the elderly across Nigeria.
