The Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) has expressed deep concern over the continued detention of Walidah, a minor from Jigawa State, weeks after a court ordered her release. The alleged perpetrator has reportedly not been handed over to law enforcement for investigation and prosecution.

In a press statement signed by Dr. Sumaye Fadimatu Hamza, National Amirah, and Hauwa Kulu Abdullahi, National PRO, FOMWAN described the situation as “unacceptable and deeply troubling.”

“As a faith-based women’s organization committed to the protection of women, children, human dignity, and justice, we emphasise that no individual is above the law. Court orders must be obeyed without delay, regardless of status or affiliation,” the statement read.

FOMWAN highlighted that children’s rights must be protected at all times, in accordance with Nigerian law, Islamic principles, and international conventions. The organisation warned that justice delayed is justice denied, particularly when a minor’s welfare is at stake, and called for transparent investigations into allegations of abuse, coercion, or unlawful detention.

The group urged relevant authorities to immediately comply with the court order, facilitate Walidah’s release, and reunite her with her parents. It also called for all allegations to be thoroughly investigated, with due process observed without obstruction or favoritism.

FOMWAN further encouraged civil society organizations, religious bodies, and human rights groups to continue advocating peacefully and lawfully for justice, to preserve public confidence in the legal system and prevent similar incidents in the future.

The organisation affirmed its commitment to standing with vulnerable women and children and pledged to continue monitoring the case closely, in shaa Allah. “Justice for Walidah. Justice for every child, regardless of religious affiliation,” the statement concluded.
