Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has welcomed the handover of the Ain Al-Asad Air Base to Iraqi forces, describing it as another sign of strengthening stability and sovereignty in Iraq.
In a joint press conference held on Sunday, the Iranian foreign minister welcomed his Iraqi counterpart, Fuad Hussein, to Tehran, noting the visit occurs shortly after Iraq’s parliamentary elections. Araghchi thanked Hussein for the visit, highlighting that the two sides have already held two productive rounds of discussions.
He emphasized that the handover of the US-occupied air base to Iraq is an action strongly welcomed by the Islamic Republic. The top Iranian diplomat reaffirmed Tehran’s firm desire for a stable, independent Iraq with a sovereign political structure.
Araghchi further said that the two ministers discussed proposals that can be diplomatically designed between Iran and Iraq to advance peace and stability in the region. He emphasized a shared understanding between the two countries as they collaborate on finalizing a comprehensive bilateral agreement.
Both ministers agreed that border crossings have transformed into frontiers of friendship, facilitating cooperation across economic, social, and political spheres.
He pointed to the deepening ties between the two nations, noting that tens of thousands of Iraqi students study in Iran, and over seven million citizens travel between the two countries annually.
