No fewer than 26 persons have lost their lives in a tragic canoe accident on River Badin, between the Adiyani community in Guri Local Government Area of Jigawa State and the Garbi community in Nguru Local Government Area of Yobe State.

The incident, which occurred at about 9:00 p.m., also left several others injured.

In a statement issued by the Information Officer of Guri Local Government Area, Muhammad Umar Hadejia, it was disclosed that three of the victims were from Adiyani community in Guri LGA, while 23 others were from Garbi community in Nguru LGA of Yobe State.

Speaking with journalists after the funeral prayers for the three victims from Adiyani, the Chairman of Guri Local Government Area, Hon. Abubakar Umar Danbarde, confirmed the incident and provided further details.

According to him, the victims were travelling by canoe from Adiyani to Garbi when the mishap occurred.

Hon. Danbarde said the local government, in collaboration with community members, immediately commenced rescue operations, adding that the injured victims were taken to health facilities for treatment and were later discharged.

The chairman disclosed that the council plans to introduce modern water transportation facilities to address existing transportation challenges and reduce the risk of similar accidents in the future.

He also announced that the local government intends to enact a by-law banning canoe transportation between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. as a safety measure, urging security agencies to ensure strict enforcement of the restriction.

Speaking on behalf of the bereaved families, Alhaji Charo Aminami of Adiyani community urged residents to accept the incident as the will of God and offered prayers for the repose of the souls of the deceased.
