Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has continued his administration’s education reform drive with the commencement of two new mega school projects in Hawul Local Government Area of the state.
The projects include a 48-classroom High Islamic College in Shafa and another mega school in Marama, aimed at expanding access to quality and inclusive education for communities in Southern Borno.
Speaking during the foundation-laying ceremony, Governor Zulum said the High Islamic College in Shafa would operate under the accredited curriculum of the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS), offering a blend of formal education and authentic Islamic studies.
According to the governor, the initiative aligns with his campaign promise to strengthen the education sector and provide modern learning facilities across the state.
“The college will allow learners to acquire digital knowledge, numeracy, literacy and vocational skills, in addition to Islamic studies,” Zulum said.
He explained that the integration of Islamic and conventional education was aimed at producing well-rounded students equipped with both moral values and practical skills required in today’s society.
The second project, located in Marama, is designed to further boost educational access in the local government area. During his visit to the site, the governor announced plans to recruit additional teachers to address manpower shortages.
“Due to the shortage of teachers, we must recruit competent teachers who are indigenes of Marama to teach in this school,” he stated.
The foundation-laying ceremonies were conducted with the support of the Commissioner of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Engr. Lawan Abba Wakilbe.
As part of the visit, Governor Zulum also inspected the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Azare, which was rehabilitated and donated by the Borno State Government to facilitate the hospital’s take-off.
In addition, the governor commissioned projects executed by Hawul Local Government Council, including a shopping complex and newly constructed market stalls.
The governor was accompanied by Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume (Borno South); former Deputy Governors Usman Mamman Durkwa and Ali Abubakar Jatau; a member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Bukar Talba; Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Abdullahi Musa Askira; other lawmakers, commissioners, local government chairmen, and stakeholders from Southern Borno.
