Amnesty International has condemned the detention of Sani Waspapping by the Department of State Services (DSS), describing the action as arbitrary and urging Nigerian authorities to respect the rule of law.
In a statement on Tuesday, the human rights organisation said Waspapping was arrested in Kaduna on Friday and has remained in custody without access to his family members or legal representatives.
Amnesty International said the arrest is widely believed to be linked to Waspapping’s social media posts concerning what it described as the ongoing US-Israel aggression in the Middle East.
The organisation noted that Waspapping is the second individual reportedly detained by the DSS in connection with commentary on the current situation in the Middle East.
It therefore called on the Nigerian authorities to ensure that due process is followed, stressing that Waspapping should be granted immediate access to his family and adequate legal assistance.
“The Nigerian authorities must abide by the rule of law at all times,” the organisation said, urging the authorities to either charge him to court promptly or release him from detention without further delay.
