The Islamic movement has announced plans to commemorate the 2026 International Quds Day on Friday, March 13, with a series of activities aimed at raising awareness about the plight of Palestinians and expressing solidarity with oppressed people in the Middle East.
The announcement was made on Wednesday during a press conference held in Abuja by Professor Abdullahi Danladi of the Resource Forum, speaking on behalf of the Islamic movement under the leadership of Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky.
According to Danladi, International Quds Day is observed annually on the last Friday of the Islamic month of Ramadan. The event was first established in 1979 by the late Iranian leader, Imam Ruhollah Khomeini, as a global platform to express support for the Palestinian cause.
He noted that the commemoration is held in several major cities around the world, including Johannesburg, London, Berlin, Paris, Athens, Madrid, New York, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Toronto, Sydney and Kuala Lumpur.
“In Nigeria, the Islamic movement under the leadership of His Eminence Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky has been observing International Quds Day for more than four decades through awareness campaigns, lectures, discussions and peaceful processions,” Danladi said.
He explained that the activities are designed to educate the public on the Palestinian struggle, which he described as a moral issue that transcends political, religious and ethnic boundaries.
Danladi stated that this year’s commemoration comes at a time when the humanitarian situation in Palestine has worsened, citing reports from international organisations and media sources that indicate large-scale casualties and displacement since the escalation of the conflict in October 2023.
He said the event will feature public lectures, discussions, awareness campaigns and processions aimed at drawing attention to the ongoing suffering of Palestinians.
“This year’s Quds Day is particularly significant as the aggression against the Palestinian people continues, resulting in massive casualties and displacement,” he added.
Danladi also stated that the 2026 commemoration would include a moment of mourning for Ayatullah Ali Khamenei, whom he described as a prominent voice that consistently supported the Palestinian cause.
He stated that Khamenei was killed in a bombing attack, describing him as a religious figure who remained steadfast in his position on the Palestinian issue.
The Islamic movement called on members of the public to participate in the planned activities to raise awareness and show solidarity with the Palestinian people.
International Quds Day has been marked globally for decades through rallies, lectures and demonstrations advocating support for Palestine and calling attention to developments in the Middle East conflict.
