Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State has called for a comprehensive review of the state’s zoning formula across its three senatorial districts after the 2027 general elections, stressing the need for fairness, equity, and inclusiveness in governance.
The governor made this known while receiving a coalition of groups from Suleja, Gurara, and Tafa Local Government Areas under the platform of the Suleja Emirate First Agenda at the Niger State Liaison Office in Abuja.

His remarks come amid increasing discussions on equitable power rotation and political representation within the state.
Governor Bago acknowledged the sensitivity of zoning in maintaining political balance, noting that while the current arrangement has served its purpose over time, evolving realities make a reassessment necessary.
He, however, clarified that such a review would not be feasible before the 2027 elections, emphasizing that it would require wide consultations among key stakeholders, particularly within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to him, any meaningful adjustment to the zoning structure must be based on consensus and careful deliberation, rather than political expediency.

He urged political actors and citizens to remain patient and focus on governance and service delivery instead of premature political calculations.

The governor also reiterated his administration’s commitment to delivering the dividends of democracy, calling on elected officials at all levels to prioritise responsive and people-oriented leadership.

Earlier, the convener of the movement, Yakubu Mohammed Katamba, said the Suleja Emirate First Agenda comprises 67 groups advocating rotational representation within the zone.

He explained that the initiative is aimed at ensuring inclusivity and equal political opportunities for all communities within the emirate.

Katamba commended Governor Bago’s open-door leadership style and his willingness to engage grassroots movements, expressing optimism that their concerns would be considered in future political arrangements.
The engagement underscores growing momentum around political restructuring at the sub-national level, as stakeholders increasingly seek frameworks that reflect diversity, balance, and collective ownership of governance in Niger State.
