Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, mother of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, has died.

The circumstances surrounding her death remain unclear as of the time of filing this report, but family sources indicate that she passed away on Friday afternoon.

Her grandson, Bello El-Rufai, confirmed the development in a statement shared on social media.

“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. From Allah we came and to Him we shall return. I wish to inform the public of the passing of my grandmother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, who died a few hours ago,” he said.

He described the deceased as the biological mother of Nasir El-Rufai and expressed gratitude for her life, while also calling on the public to offer prayers for her soul.

The development comes amid ongoing legal proceedings involving the former governor. He is currently in custody following his arraignment by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission over a 10-count charge bordering on alleged conversion of public property and money laundering.

El-Rufai has pleaded not guilty to all charges. A Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna adjourned the hearing of his bail application to March 31.

The presiding judge, Rilwanu Aikawa, fixed the date after hearing arguments from both the defence and prosecution.
