The Media Forum of the Islamic movement in Nigeria has explained the reasons behind recent peaceful protests organised by its adherents in solidarity with the people of Iran.
In a press statement issued on March 3, 2026, and signed by the Media Forum under the leadership of Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, the movement said the demonstrations were intended to clarify its position and express solidarity with Iran and other oppressed people around the world.

According to the statement, the Islamic movement has, for nearly five decades, focused on advocacy, teaching, and raising public awareness on issues of justice and social order. It noted that the movement promotes a system that recognises Islam as a path to social justice and moral values.
The group also stated that it has historically supported oppressed communities globally, stressing that it has consistently spoken out against aggression directed at Muslim countries and other vulnerable populations.

The statement further argued that global powers, particularly Western countries, have played significant roles in shaping geopolitical challenges faced by Muslims, Africans, and many developing nations. It added that political disunity in many regions often benefits dominant global powers.
Clarifying its ideological composition, the movement said although many of its adherents have Shi’a orientations, it is not a sectarian organisation but a broad-based movement open to individuals from diverse backgrounds who share its ideological vision.

It explained that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei, is regarded by many followers not only as a political leader but also as a religious authority in Shia Islam, drawing a comparison with the spiritual leadership role of the Pope in the Catholic Church.

The movement condemned what it described as attacks carried out within the context of hostilities involving a coalition of the United States and Israel, saying such actions have drawn criticism from people of conscience and various international bodies. It argued that aggression against religious or political leaders violates international norms.

The Islamic Movement urged the public to view the protests as a peaceful expression aimed at correcting misconceptions and reaffirming its longstanding stance against oppression.

It reiterated that the demonstrations were non-violent and intended solely to register grievances and show solidarity with oppressed people worldwide.

The statement concluded by affirming that the movement would continue to support communities facing injustice across the globe.
