Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has reassigned members of the State Executive Council to oversee ministries left vacant following the resignation of six commissioners ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The decision was taken at the State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House in Minna.
The affected commissioners reportedly stepped down to pursue elective positions, in compliance with the governor’s earlier directive requiring political appointees with such ambitions to resign, in line with principles of transparency and political accountability.
Under the new arrangement, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Muazu Hamidu Jantabo, will oversee the Ministry of Rural Development. The Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Mustapha Ndajiwo, has been assigned to supervise the Ministry of Special Duties.
Similarly, the Commissioner for Investment, Aminu Suleman Takuma, will oversee the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives, while the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Jacob Baba Isa, has been directed to supervise the Ministry of Sports Development.
In the education sector, the Commissioner for Technical and Vocational Education, Abdullahi Adamu Sheshi Katcha, will oversee the Ministry of Tertiary Education. The Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hadiza Idris Kuta, has been assigned to supervise the Ministry of Art and Culture.
Governor Bago urged the affected commissioners to discharge their additional responsibilities with diligence and commitment to service delivery.
He expressed confidence in the ability of his cabinet to maintain effective coordination across ministries and sustain governance despite the changes.
Observers say the move reflects efforts by the administration to ensure continuity in governance while political activities ahead of the 2027 elections gather momentum.
