Amnesty International Demands Probe Into Alleged Torture Killing of Teenager in Katsina

Amnesty International Nigeria has called on Nigerian authorities to investigate the alleged killing of a 16-year-old boy, Bishir Malam Dauda, by police officers at the Yankara outpost in Faskari Local Government Area.

According to Amnesty International Nigeria, its investigation revealed that the teenager was allegedly tortured to death through severe beatings with iron rods while in police custody.

The organisation stated that Bishir was reportedly picked up by police officers from his tsangaya school on May 7, 2026, after a friend mentioned his name in connection with the alleged theft of a bag of soya beans.

Amnesty International alleged that the teenager was detained without the presence of any parent, guardian, or adult relative and was tied up by police officers who demanded that he confess to the alleged crime.

The statement further claimed that after refusing to confess, Bishir was subjected to further torture until he became lifeless. His body was later reportedly deposited at the Yankara Primary Healthcare Centre.
The rights organisation described the incident as part of a disturbing pattern of human rights violations in which suspects are allegedly tortured to force confessions or extort money for their release.

According to Amnesty International, the Nigeria Police Force, which was established to protect citizens, has increasingly become associated with brutality, fear, corruption, and impunity in some parts of the country.

The organisation insisted that the incident must not be ignored and called for all police officers directly or indirectly involved in the alleged atrocity to be thoroughly investigated and held accountable.

Amnesty International further noted that its research since 2016 has consistently exposed cases of alleged police brutality, torture, unlawful detention, and abuse of power against Nigerians who are often unable to defend themselves against criminal accusations.
