As the All Progressives Congress (APC) intensifies preparations for its primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections, Senator Abdulrahman Buba Kwacham, an aspirant for the Adamawa Central Senatorial seat, has rejected an alleged move by party leaders to adopt Governor Ahmadu Fintiri as the party’s candidate through a consensus arrangement.
Kwacham maintained that he was neither consulted nor carried along in the purported arrangement, insisting that it does not reflect the wishes and aspirations of the people of the zone.
The senator made the remarks while addressing journalists at his Abuja residence.
Kwacham, who also holds the traditional title of Sarkin Fulanin Mubi, warned that imposing a candidate through consensus could have adverse consequences for the party, particularly in the build-up to the 2027 general elections.
According to him, the most credible and democratic way to resolve the emerging dispute is through a transparent and competitive primary election, where all aspirants are given a level playing field to test their popularity.
He argued that a free and fair primary would foster unity within the party, as aggrieved aspirants would be more inclined to accept the outcome and work collectively for the party’s success at the polls.
The senator further cautioned the APC against repeating what he described as past political miscalculations in some states, where internal grievances and dissatisfaction among party members allegedly weakened the party’s electoral fortunes.
Reports indicate that Governor Ahmadu Fintiri recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC and is seeking the senatorial ticket following the expiration of his tenure as governor. However, his reported bid to emerge as the party’s candidate through consensus is said to be generating resistance within the party ranks.
