As political activities continue to gather momentum across Nigeria, with politicians intensifying efforts to mobilize young people for rallies and campaigns — and in some instances allegedly using them to perpetrate politically motivated violence — a prominent Islamic cleric based in Kano State, Sheikh Muhajjadina Sani Kano Alfalaki, has called on parents and government authorities to closely monitor young people in order to prevent their exploitation for acts of violence and social unrest under the guise of politics.
Sheikh Muhajjadina, who also serves as President of the African Association of Astronomical Scholars, made the remarks during an interaction with journalists at his office in Abuja earlier this week.
The cleric expressed deep concern over what he described as the growing trend of politicians allegedly manipulating youths by supplying them with intoxicants during political gatherings before deploying them to engage in violent activities.
“You often see these youths armed and intimidating innocent citizens, and in many cases such actions result in loss of lives or severe injuries,” he stated.
He challenged politicians to allow their own children to spearhead such activities if they genuinely believe they are beneficial to society.
Sheikh Muhajjadina further urged the government to introduce stringent legislation against political thuggery and related acts of violence across the country.
“There should be severe penalties for any politician found sponsoring or encouraging political violence. Rather than recruiting youths for destructive political activities, politicians should channel their resources toward creating employment opportunities and expanding access to education for our young people at all levels,” he said.
He also advised youths to remain vigilant and avoid becoming instruments in the hands of desperate politicians, stressing that such individuals do not genuinely have their best interests at heart.
“Young people must remain committed to their education and personal development instead of allowing themselves to be manipulated for selfish political interests,” he added.
Sheikh Muhajjadina is widely recognized for his humanitarian initiatives and sustained support for vulnerable communities in Kano State and other parts of Nigeria.
