Youths from across the 15 Local Government Areas of Kano Central Senatorial District have strongly rejected the alleged move to impose former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau as the APC senatorial candidate for the 2027 elections, declaring their support for Abdulsalam Abdulkarim Zaura, popularly known as AA Zaura.
The position was made known during a gathering attended by hundreds of youths from across the senatorial district, in what observers described as a major expression of resistance against the alleged sidelining of longstanding party loyalists in favour of recent entrants into the party.
Addressing the gathering, one of the youth leaders said party members who had sacrificed for the growth of the APC would not accept any attempt to hand over the ticket to individuals who were not part of the party during difficult periods.
Speaker after speaker condemned what they described as the continued recycling of old political figures at the expense of committed party members who had remained loyal to the APC over the years.
The gathering subsequently adopted a resolution rejecting the candidature of Shekarau and endorsing AA Zaura as the preferred aspirant for the Kano Central Senatorial ticket. The resolution is expected to be forwarded to the APC leadership in Kano State and the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.
A women’s leader from Ungogo, who spoke anonymously, described Zaura as a loyal party stakeholder who had remained with the APC through challenging times.
Since joining the APC in 2020, AA Zaura has been actively involved in mobilising support for the party, reconciling aggrieved members, and strengthening party structures across Kano State ahead of the 2023 general elections.
Supporters at the gathering also recalled that Zaura stepped down from the governorship race in the interest of party unity, a decision they claimed had not been adequately appreciated by the party leadership.
Despite their opposition to Shekarau’s alleged candidacy, the youths maintained that they still respect the former governor, insisting that their position was based on principle and fairness rather than personal attacks.
Some speakers further called on Shekarau to uphold the ideals of internal democracy by allowing younger party loyalists the opportunity to contest for elective positions.
As of the time of filing this report, the APC leadership in Kano State had not issued any official statement regarding the development, while Shekarau’s camp also remained silent.
However, political observers believe the development may shape the future direction of the APC in Kano Central ahead of the 2027 general elections.
