Arewa Youth Ambassadors Call for Sowore’s Release, Urge Security Focus on Terrorism

The Arewa Youth Ambassadors have expressed concern over what they describe as a growing imbalance in Nigeria’s security priorities, alleging that security agencies are increasingly focusing on political activists and dissenting voices while armed criminal groups continue to threaten communities across the country.

In a statement issued on Monday by its National Coordinator, Comrade Yahaya M. Abdullahi, the group called for the immediate and unconditional release of activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, insisting that his continued detention represents a broader threat to democratic freedoms.

The group argued that at a time when Nigerians are grappling with persistent insecurity—including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and violent attacks—state security resources should be directed primarily toward combating violent criminal networks rather than targeting individuals engaged in peaceful democratic expression.

It cited recent reports of attacks attributed to armed groups and bandit leaders, including Bello Turji and Lakurawa elements, describing them as evidence of the deepening security crisis in parts of the country. The group noted that such incidents have resulted in loss of lives, abductions, displacement of rural communities, and widespread fear among citizens.

According to the statement, farmers, students, teachers and rural residents continue to bear the brunt of insecurity, with many communities reportedly living under constant threat of attack while some victims of kidnapping remain in captivity.

The Arewa Youth Ambassadors warned that the perceived focus on political activists and opposition figures risks creating the impression that criticism of government is being treated as a greater threat than violent crime and terrorism.

They stressed that the case involving Omoyele Sowore has become symbolic of wider concerns about civil liberties, democratic rights and respect for the rule of law in Nigeria.

The group maintained that all citizens, regardless of political affiliation or opinion, are entitled to the rights guaranteed under the Constitution, including freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and political participation.

It further argued that democracy is strengthened through debate, accountability and criticism, warning that intimidation or suppression of dissent could weaken democratic institutions.

The statement called on the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to intensify efforts against terrorists, bandits, kidnappers and other violent criminal groups responsible for insecurity across the country.

The group also urged government authorities to ensure that due process is respected and that constitutional safeguards are upheld in all legal and security actions.

Reaffirming its commitment to democracy and human rights, the Arewa Youth Ambassadors stated that Nigeria requires a security system that prioritises the protection of citizens and the defeat of violent criminal networks over what it described as the harassment of activists and critics.

Comrade Abdullahi added that the release of Sowore would demonstrate Nigeria’s continued commitment to democratic principles and constitutional governance.
