A non-governmental organization, the Center for Democratic Development Research and Training (CEDDERT), is partnering with traditional institutions to sensitize them on the need for communities to participate in the provision of security across the Zazzau emirate.
The Director General of the center, Professor Abubakar Sadiq, disclosed this during a sensitization workshop for traditional rulers in the Zazzau emirate held in Zaria.
In a paper titled "The Role and Responsibility of Traditional Rulers: A Wake-Up Call," Professor Abubakar Sadiq pointed out that traditional rulers should be given constitutional roles to enable them to contribute their quota to the security of their communities. He called on the participants to extend the knowledge they have acquired to their subjects to stop the recruitment of teenagers into banditry activities, due to its implications and illegal financial benefits.
Also, in his presentation, one of the directors of the center, Professor Mustafa Umar Gwadabe, noted that the center conducted research in Birnin Gwari in Kaduna State, as well as in Zamfara and Katsina, which revealed that youth have been recruited into kidnapping and banditry activities by enticing them with money and drugs.
In his speech, the chairman of the occasion, the Wazirin Zazzau, Alhaji Muhammad Inuwa Aminu, called on district heads and village heads to organize similar workshops within their localities to achieve the desired aim.
Narrating the scenario of banditry and kidnapping activities in his area, the Kaigaman Zazzau, District Head of Kidandan, Alhaji Nuhu Umar, said that for over seven years, ninety percent of scholars’ children in the area are out of school due to the disengagement of teachers by the Nasir El-Rufai administration, and those that are posted do not report to their duties due to insecurity.
The Kaigaman Zazzau also said thousands of hectares of farmland could not be cultivated as nobody wants to go to their farms, and many communities have left their houses as a result of insecurity.
The workshop was attended by security operatives. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) presented papers during the workshop.
