The Niger State House of Assembly has resolved to summon the head of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Minna to appear before the House to address the rising issue of drug addiction in the state.
This decision was part of the resolutions reached during a House plenary session where a motion titled "The Rampant Rate of Drug and Intoxicant Consumption by Youths and the Need for Urgent Government Intervention" was sponsored by Hon. Yahaya Abubakar Ahmadu, Member Representing Gbako Constituency.
Hon. Ahmadu informed the House that the increasing rate of illicit drug and intoxicant consumption among youths in the society is becoming extremely alarming. He emphasized that youths, under the influence of drugs, often engage in various criminal activities. He further highlighted that many of these illicit drug users are youths and underage children who have unfortunately dropped out of school and have now become a menace and nuisance to society.
Hon. Abubakar Ahmadu explained that the craving for these drugs and intoxicants drives the youths to engage in despicable acts to obtain money.
He suggested that engaging these youths in skills acquisition, farming, and other empowerment programs could significantly reduce their idle hours and deter them from drug use.
Hon. Ahmadu also stressed that the government, parents, traditional, and religious leaders all have crucial roles to play in controlling this dire situation.
Following the presentation and deliberation, the House unanimously adopted the motion's recommendations. The day's plenary was presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Barr. Abdulmalik Mohammad Sarkin Daji.
