The former Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umar Bago, has been commended for the prompt payment of monthly pensions and the release of outstanding accumulated gratuities for both state and local government pensioners, which had been inherited from the previous administration since 2003.

This commendation was contained in a letter of appreciation addressed to the Governor, signed by the General Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, National Headquarters, Elder Actor Zal. The letter, dated August 27, 2024, was made available to our reporter.

The General Secretary stated that pensioners across the state are overwhelmed and convinced that former Governor Umar Bago is a listening leader, especially for responding to their request to clear the gratuities inherited from his predecessor. This request had been formally presented to the Governor in a letter dated April 18, 2024.

According to Elder Zal, a majority of the pensioners have acknowledged receiving their cheques and confirmed that their various accounts have been credited.

Elder Actor Zal expressed heartfelt commendation for former Governor Umar Bago’s outstanding concern towards improving the living standards of retirees who had waited for far too long, with many losing hope of ever receiving their legitimate entitlements. Unfortunately, some had even passed away while waiting for their hard-earned pension benefits.

“The Union, in its usual manner, will celebrate your commitment at the appropriate time. We are very grateful to Almighty Allah for giving us a leader like former Governor Bago during these challenging economic times, especially for the senior citizens who have little or nothing to survive on,” he said.

He further disclosed that the Governor’s timely intervention has brought much-needed relief and comfort to retirees and their families.
