Residents of Minna, the Niger State capital, and its environs have lamented the persistent attacks, thefts, house burglaries, phone snatchings, and robberies that continue unabated on a daily basis.
Reports from Minna reveal that the insecurity plaguing the state capital is widespread, affecting all communities and streets. Many have been injured, killed, or had their properties stolen, with no arrests made.
It has been reliably gathered that shop owners, houses, and residents have become victims of the current insecurity in the state capital. The criminals have stolen cell phones, laptops, iPads, and cash worth millions of naira, among other valuables.
Reports also indicate that some of these attacks occur at midnight or during rainstorms, allowing the perpetrators to operate undisturbed. This highlights a significant failure on the part of security agents and the government's inability to protect the lives and properties of citizens.
Various areas in Minna and its environs, including Balikin Sale, Tunga, Kpakungu, Maitumbi, Bosso, Sauka Kahuta, Limawa, Dutsen Kura, and Chanchaga, have experienced numerous attacks.
There is an urgent need for increased surveillance, monitoring, and a review of the security architecture to curb this menace. Some communities have resorted to self-protection measures.
In separate interviews, residents have called on Governor Mohammed Umar Bago and the Commissioner of Police, Ebenezer Shawulu Danmamman, to take urgent and decisive action against the perpetrators of these crimes. Residents no longer sleep with both eyes closed due to the fear of attacks.
When contacted, the Niger State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, was unable to confirm the incidents but assured that he would provide more details after consulting with the concerned Divisional Police Officers (DPOs).
