A mobile money company, Opay, will provide a N300,000 scholarship to each of 20 students at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria. The Chief Public Affairs Officer of Opay, Mr. Justin Zhang, disclosed this today during a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, in his office.
Zhang stated that the project began last year with the University of Lagos and the University of Calabar, where they renovated some buildings. He noted that Opay will offer scholarships to 400 students across the country over ten years, with 20 students benefiting each year. The selected universities include Ahmadu Bello University in the North, the University of Ibadan in the South West, and Nnamdi Azikiwe University in the South East.
Mr Zhang also revealed that Opay plans to donate 20,000 US dollars to the community for women's empowerment and skills acquisition. He expressed the company's readiness to take on more social responsibilities, emphasizing their long-term commitment to ABU.
In response, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kabiru Bala thanked Mr. Zhang for providing ABU students with the opportunity to benefit from the scholarship scheme. The Vice-Chancellor identified the renovation or expansion of the university health centre, maintenance of the faculties of Engineering and Sciences, and the upgrade of ICT facilities as potential projects for Opay's consideration.
