The National Hydro Electric Power Producing Areas Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has inaugurated an 11-member Freedom of Information (FOI) committee to enhance transparency and accountability in its operations.

Speaking during the inauguration and training of the committee members in Minna on Monday, the Managing Director of N-HYPPADEC, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq-Yelwa, emphasized the importance of transparency in meeting public expectations.

The event, themed “Empowering Accountability Through Freedom of Information (FOI)”, highlighted the Federal Government’s directive mandating all its institutions to establish FOI committees as part of civil service reforms aimed at fostering openness and efficiency.

Sadiq-Yelwa, represented by his Special Assistant, Prof. Yasin Abubakar, charged the committee members to diligently fulfill their responsibilities and assured them of the commission’s full support in executing their mandate.

“Transparency and accountability in service delivery are crucial for promoting efficiency in operations across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies,” he said.

He further described the FOI Act as a vital tool in achieving the commission’s mandate and urged the committee members to take the training seriously to effectively discharge their duties.

In his remarks, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi, represented by the Head of the Freedom of Information Unit, Barr. Godwin Garuba, commended N-HYPPADEC for being among the first agencies to inaugurate its FOI committee.

He underscored the critical role of the FOI Act in the fight against corruption and urged the committee members to perform their duties diligently, emphasizing the importance of their work in fostering accountability and good governance in the country.
