Following President Bola Tinubu's assent to bills establishing development commissions for various regions in the country, the Senate has appointed chairmen and deputy chairmen of standing committees to oversee the commissions.
The appointments were announced by Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio. Senator Babangida Hussaini has been appointed as chairman and Senator Muntari Dandutse as deputy chairman of the Senate Committee on the North West Development Commission. Senator Orji Uzor Kalu will serve as chairman, while Senator Kenneth Eze will be the deputy chairman of the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission. Senator Titus Zam Tartenger has been named chairman of the Senate Committee on the North Central Development Commission, with Senator Isa Jibrin as deputy chairman.
In addition to these appointments, the Senate has reshuffled the leadership of some standing committees. Senator Abdul Ningi has been moved from the Population Committee to head the Senate Committee on FERMA. Senator Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan, who previously chaired the Senate Committee on Local Content, has been appointed as the new chair of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organizations.
Other changes include the appointment of Senator Garba Maidoki as chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports Development, Senator Joel Thomas as chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Content, and Senator Victor Umeh as chairman of the Senate Committee on National Population and NIMC. Umeh was previously in charge of the Senate Committee on Diaspora before his reassignment.
These appointments and leadership changes reflect the Senate’s commitment to ensuring effective oversight of regional development commissions and other key sectors.
