The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will not field a northern candidate for the presidency in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during a media chat on Monday, Wike firmly opposed any suggestion of the party ceding its presidential ticket to the North, citing issues of fairness and political balance.
“The PDP cannot give its presidential ticket to the North in 2027,” Wike stated. “Selfishness can destroy a political system.”
He further explained the implications of such a decision: “For instance, if the current President runs and wins again in 2027, by 2031 the APC will likely zone their presidential ticket to the North. What then will the PDP do? Should we also turn around and follow suit just because APC has done so?”
Wike’s comments underscore ongoing internal debates within the PDP regarding zoning arrangements and the party’s strategic direction ahead of the next electoral cycle.
