Niger State Governor, Farmer Mohammed Umaru Bago, has signed five significant bills into law, aimed at strengthening the state’s justice system, education, healthcare, water management, and transportation sectors.
The Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Nasiru Mua’zu, disclosed this during a press briefing at the Government House in Minna. He was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary and Solicitor General of the state, Barr. Mairo Mohammed Mann.
According to Mua’zu, the newly signed laws include:
A Law to Establish the Niger State Rail-Line Corporation (2025): This law aims to provide a legal framework for the development and regulation of railway infrastructure in the state.
A Law to Establish the Niger State Water User Association (2025): This law is designed to regulate water sources, promote efficient water use, and ensure the safety of water infrastructure across the state.
A Penal Code Law for Niger State: This replaces outdated criminal codes, aligning with current best practices in criminal justice and ensuring more effective prosecution of offenses.
A Law to Repeal and Re-enact the Niger State College of Education Law (2011): The institution will now be known as the Dr. Umaru Sanda Ahmadu College of Education, Minna, with an updated legal framework to improve its governance and performance.
A Law to Establish an Agency for the Registration and Regulation of Private Health Facilities in Niger State: This law aims to ensure quality control and standardization in the operation of private health institutions.
Speaking at the briefing, Mua’zu noted that the Penal Code Law is a significant innovation that aligns with the principles of criminal justice reform in the state.
He emphasized that Governor Bago’s decision to sign the bills into law reflects his administration’s strong commitment to improving the lives of the people of Niger State.
“These laws are essential to the socio-economic development of the state and are expected to be embraced by all stakeholders for maximum impact,” the commissioner added.
