Media practitioners in Niger State have been urged to maintain professionalism and accuracy in information dissemination, as they are critical stakeholders in sustaining peace and security.

The call was made by the Commissioner for Homeland Security, Muhammad Bello Abdullahi, during a pre-summit media chat and roundtable discussion with journalists from various media organizations, held in Minna.

Describing journalists as key allies in the state’s security framework, the Commissioner emphasized their crucial role in delivering accurate and responsible information to the public.

He urged media professionals to avoid spreading panic-inducing reports and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to partnering with the media to overcome security challenges and promote the vision of a new and secure Niger State.

Providing an overview of the forthcoming Peace and Security Summit, the Commissioner said the event—titled "Collaborative Approaches to Security and Peacebuilding with a View to Safeguarding Niger State"—is designed to engage stakeholders at the local, state, and federal levels in developing practical solutions to the state's security challenges.

He noted that the summit will also address issues related to security information management, stressing that efficient information handling enhances decision-making, proactive responses, and community preparedness.

Responding to questions from journalists, Abdullahi reassured attendees that the state government remains steadfast in tackling all forms of security threats.

Also speaking at the event, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Bologi Ibrahim—represented by the Coordinator of Media Affairs, Hamza Waziri—said Governor Umaru Bago is working tirelessly to ensure peace, development, and progress across the state, adding that journalists’ cooperation is vital to achieving these goals.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Niger State Chapter, Comrade Abu Nmodu, reiterated that journalists in the state have always upheld the ethics of the profession and will continue to champion the cause of peace and responsible reporting.

In her remarks, Dr. Diamond Preye, a director at the Abdulsalami Abubakar Institute for Peace and Sustainable Development Studies, commended the state government’s decision to organize the peace summit. She noted that without peace, meaningful development cannot be achieved, and called on all citizens to become advocates of peace.
