Governors of the 19 Northern states and traditional rulers under the Northern States Traditional Rulers' Council have pledged to intensify efforts to tackle insecurity in the region, emphasizing greater collaboration with federal security agencies and the urgent need for state policing.
This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of a joint meeting between the Northern States Governors' Forum (NSGF) and the Chairmen of the Northern States Traditional Rulers’ Councils, held at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Kaduna.
In the communiqué signed by the NSGF Chairman and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, the Forum expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to resolving security and infrastructure challenges in the North.
“The Forum commends Mr. President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his sustained commitment to addressing the security challenges and infrastructural deficits in Northern Nigeria,” the communiqué stated.
To further enhance security efforts, the Forum resolved to collaborate with the Nigerian Governors’ Forum to develop strategies for increasing support to federal security agencies.
“The Forum resolved to liaise with the Nigerian Governors Forum to work out modalities of how to increase support to the Federal Security Agencies,” it added.
The governors also pledged to strengthen local security initiatives and called for the establishment of coordinated surveillance platforms across state borders in the North.
“The Forum also resolved to strengthen peculiar local initiatives in combating all forms of security challenges,” the communiqué read. “The Forum also resolved to urgently set up inter-state platforms to coordinate surveillance on our joint borders.”
Reiterating a longstanding demand, the Forum backed the creation of state police and urged the National Assembly to fast-track relevant legislation.
“The Forum reiterated its support for the creation of State Police and called on the National Assembly to expedite action on the enactment of the legal framework for its take off,” the communiqué emphasized.
The next meeting of the Forum is scheduled to hold on August 30, 2025.
Present at the meeting were all 19 Northern governors and the Chairmen of their respective state traditional councils.
