President Bola Tinubu has approved the creation and recruitment of a new unit of armed forest guards to secure Nigeria’s 1,129 forests and flush out terrorists, kidnappers, and criminal gangs using them as hideouts.
The initiative, aimed at reclaiming forested areas from criminal elements, will involve a joint security effort between the federal and state governments. The Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) and the Ministry of Environment have been directed to oversee full implementation.
The forest guards will undergo training, be equipped with weapons, and deployed across the country to support broader national security operations. Thousands of young Nigerians are expected to be recruited into the force, providing both security and employment.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to national security, President Tinubu declared that no part of Nigeria’s territory will be allowed to remain under the control of terrorists or bandits.
“We will take back our forests,” the President vowed.
