The Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Professor Adamu Ahmed, has urged the university’s alumni association to spearhead a ₦5 billion fundraising campaign over the next five years to support the ABU Endowment Foundation.
Professor Ahmed made the call on Friday, May 30, 2025, while receiving the National President of the ABU Alumni Association Worldwide, Malam Adamu Mamman Kontagora, who paid him a courtesy visit at the university.
Describing alumni as vital external stakeholders in the university system, the Vice-Chancellor noted that the journey to revitalising ABU would be incomplete without the active involvement of its graduates.
“Alumni associations are the backbone of any university. Although that culture is yet to be fully institutionalised in Nigeria, we must embrace it now,” Prof Ahmed said.
He identified inadequate electricity supply as one of the pressing challenges facing the university and called on the alumni association to rise to the occasion.
Professor Ahmed also called for the establishment of scholarship schemes by the alumni to support indigent and deserving students. He assured the visiting delegation of his administration’s readiness to work closely with the alumni body throughout his tenure.
In his remarks, Malam Kontagora congratulated Professor Ahmed on his appointment and pledged the association’s total support for his administration.
He emphasised that globally, no university can thrive without the active involvement and commitment of its alumni.
“We have developed a consolidated action plan, which will be submitted to your office soon. We also have a working arrangement for collaboration on the ABU Endowment Foundation,” Kontagora stated.
The visit was witnessed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Ahmed Doko Ibrahim, and the Director of Advancement and International Education, Professor Sani Abba Aliyu, who joined the Vice-Chancellor in welcoming the alumni delegation.
