The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Minna Branch, has commended the Governor of Niger State, Farmer Mohammed Umaru Bago, for his swift and decisive response to the recent security breach at the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai.
In a statement issued on Thursday in Minna, the Chairman of the NBA Minna Branch, Isyaku Barau, Esq., described the Governor’s order for the temporary closure of the university as “timely, courageous, and necessary,” noting that it demonstrates responsible leadership and a deep concern for the lives and welfare of students, staff, and the entire academic community.
“We commend His Excellency, Farmer Mohammed Umaru Bago, for his proactive and bold decision to temporarily close IBBU Lapai in response to the regrettable breach of security and loss of lives,” Barau stated. “This step underscores the sanctity of human life and the priority which government must place on the safety of its citizens—particularly within educational institutions.”
The association expressed its heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the tragic incidents and reiterated its solidarity with the university community during this trying time.
While praising the government's action, the NBA emphasized the urgent need for wider societal involvement in security management.
"Security is no longer the exclusive preserve of government,” Barau said. “In this era where insecurity is penetrating even our citadels of learning, all citizens must assume a measure of responsibility—whether as students, educators, community members, or legal practitioners. Our collective vigilance, cooperation, and civic discipline are essential in combating this growing menace.”
Barau noted that the increasing vulnerability of academic institutions should be treated with utmost concern, advocating for long-term, intelligence-driven security strategies to safeguard campuses and learning environments across Niger State.
The NBA Minna Branch pledged its continued collaboration with the state government in efforts to entrench law, protect life and property, and ensure the preservation of peace and security.
“The rule of law demands not only justice in our courts but also security in our schools and safety in our homes,” the statement concluded. “We must all rise to this challenge with unity of purpose and patriotic resolve.”
