A former Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Professor Abdullahi Mustapha, has advised the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adamu Ahmed, to maintain focus, remain straightforward, and foster inclusive leadership as he assumes the mantle of leadership at Nigeria’s premier university.
Prof. Mustapha, who currently chairs the Committee for the Implementation of the proposed Trust University of Nigeria, gave the advice during a courtesy visit to Prof. Ahmed in his office. The delegation visited to congratulate him on his appointment as ABU’s 13th Vice-Chancellor.
Describing the position as a "hot seat," the former Vice-Chancellor expressed confidence in Prof. Ahmed’s ability to meet the demands of the office. “What the university needs now is leadership, development, and progress,” he said, adding that with Prof. Ahmed at the helm, ABU would witness greater achievements that would elevate its standing.
Prof. Mustapha also underscored the importance of the university’s Phase II project, calling it a “very important concept” aimed at decongesting the already developed Phase I of the institution. He expressed optimism that Prof. Ahmed’s wide exposure and deep institutional knowledge would help tackle the university’s myriad challenges.
In his response, Prof. Ahmed commended members of the committee, describing them as “elders who have significantly contributed to ABU’s growth.” He acknowledged the Phase II project as a legacy initiated during Mustapha’s tenure and assured that his administration would work to see its continued development.
He also reaffirmed ABU’s commitment to supporting the establishment of the proposed Trust University of Nigeria, which he said would further strengthen educational opportunities in Northern Nigeria and the country at large.
The visiting delegation included distinguished academics and professionals: former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Ibrahim Na’iya Sada; former VC of Federal University, Lokoja, Prof. Abdulmumini Hassan Rafindadi; Head of Department of Building, ABU, Prof. A.D. AbdulAzeez; Arc. Lawal Yankara; QS Yahaya Abubakar; Surveyor Haruna Yaro Ngulde; and Malam Abdullahi Haruna.
Prof. Ahmed was joined during the visit by key members of the university management team, including the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Ahmed Doko Ibrahim; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Advancement, Research, and Innovation), Prof. Sanusi Aliyu Rafindadi; Registrar’s representative, Dr. Aliyu Dalha Kankia; Director of Public Affairs, Malam Auwalu Umar; and his Special Assistant, Malam Auwal Yusuf Mohammed.
The visit ended with the formal presentation of a congratulatory letter to the new Vice-Chancellor, along with prayers for divine guidance in his leadership journey.
