A Bill for an Act to establish the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Gusau, sponsored by Hon. Dr. Abdulmalik Zubairu Zannan Bungudu, Member representing Bungudu/Maru Federal Constituency, has scaled second reading in the House of Representatives.
According to a statement signed by Aminu Lawal Bungudu, Chief Spokesperson to Hon. Zannan Bungudu, the bill was first introduced and read on the floor of the House on Thursday, February 20, 2025.
While leading the debate during the second reading, Hon. Zannan Bungudu emphasised that the bill, if passed into law, would boost investment in the healthcare sector by enhancing medical education and ensuring citizens' access to high-quality medical care.
He informed the House that the Federal University, Gusau, has already commenced its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program, which cannot effectively progress without a dedicated teaching hospital.
"This initiative," he said, "will significantly address the acute shortage of medical professionals in Nigeria, particularly in underserved regions like Zamfara State."
In response, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajuddeen Abbas directed the Clerk of the House to proceed with the second reading of the bill.
The bill was subsequently referred to the House Committee on University Education for further legislative action.
