In a significant political realignment, former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN, has announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing national decay, insecurity, and economic hardship under the current administration.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Malami said the decision followed "wide consultations and deep personal reflection," and was driven not by ambition or anger, but by "love for our nation and concern for the hardship our people are facing daily."
“Nigeria is bleeding,” he declared. “Insecurity has taken over our homes, especially in the North. Banditry, kidnappings, and terrorism have become part of our lives while the government prioritizes politics over the safety of its citizens.”
He expressed dismay at the country's economic collapse, noting the skyrocketing cost of living, shrinking job opportunities, and growing hopelessness among the youth.
“Our economy is in shambles. Prices of basic food items have tripled. The poor can no longer feed their families,” he said. “Instead of focusing on real solutions, the government is consumed by propaganda and political distractions.”
Malami, who served under the APC government since 2015, lamented what he described as a system that has abandoned governance and replaced merit with political loyalty.
“I cannot remain part of a system that watches in silence as Nigerians suffer and die,” he stated.
Announcing his new political path, Malami said he has joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) — a platform he described as "built on the values of justice, inclusion, competence, and national renewal." He confirmed the move was in line with the agenda of the emerging national opposition coalition seeking to “rescue Nigeria from further decline.”
“To the people of Kebbi State, I remain your son and servant. I will never abandon you,” Malami assured, emphasizing that his defection was aimed at amplifying the voices and protecting the interests of the people.
He concluded by calling on all Nigerians to join the new movement to reclaim the country from what he called "a failing and indifferent government."
“Let us rise above fear and reclaim our nation. Nigeria belongs to all of us,” he said.
Malami’s defection is expected to intensify the growing momentum around the ADC-led coalition, which has recently gained the support of several prominent political figures disillusioned with the current state of governance in Nigeria.
