As part of ongoing efforts to engage citizens in the constitutional reform process, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bauchi State, in collaboration with Senator Shehu Buba, has hosted a stakeholders’ town hall summit aimed at collating public input on the amendment of the 1999 Constitution.
The one-day summit, held in Bauchi, was organized by the APC Bauchi South Zonal Executive Committee in partnership with Senator Buba, who represents Bauchi South Senatorial District and chairs the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence.
The event served as an inclusive platform for broad-based engagement, drawing participants from across the political, traditional, civil, and professional spectrum. Attendees included legal experts, traditional rulers, civil society representatives, youth and women groups, political leaders, union officials, and artisans.
Deliberations at the forum focused on constitutional provisions requiring urgent reform to better reflect the aspirations of Nigerians, with particular emphasis on enhancing federalism, equity, security, and local governance.
In his opening remarks, Alhaji Abdulmumini Kundak, Chairman of the APC Bauchi South Zonal Committee, described the summit as a critical step toward shaping a constitution that reflects the will of the people. He noted that the exercise would feed directly into the national review process and safeguard the collective interests of both Bauchi South and the Nigerian federation.
Ahead of the upcoming Zonal Public Hearing in Maiduguri, stakeholders at the meeting resolved to set up a special committee to coordinate memorandum submissions from communities across the senatorial district. The move, they agreed, would ensure harmonized, inclusive, and well-articulated recommendations.
Mr. Ibrahim Umar was announced as Chairman of the newly formed committee. In his response, he pledged to oversee a transparent and efficient process, ensuring that all relevant voices—especially from grassroots communities—are represented in the final submissions to the Constitution Review Committee.
The event marks a significant step in promoting participatory democracy and civic inclusion in constitutional reform, with Senator Buba and the APC leadership reaffirming their commitment to giving Bauchi South a strong voice in shaping Nigeria’s future.
