...Describes it as Nigeria’s Fastest-Growing Public University

By Awwal Umar Kontagora

The Vice Chancellor of Abdulkadir Kure University (AKUM), Minna, Professor Mohammed Aliyu Paiko, has described the institution as the fastest-growing public university in Nigeria, with a clear vision to become a hub for entrepreneurship and specialised education.

Professor Paiko made the statement on Tuesday while receiving the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Niger State Council, on a courtesy visit to his office in Minna.

He disclosed that the university, which commenced academic activities in 2024 with about 100 students, currently has over 700 students enrolled, with more still undergoing registration. He emphasised that AKUM is “steadily marching towards greatness.”

According to the Vice Chancellor, over 3,500 applications have already been received for the 2025/2026 academic session — a strong indicator of growing interest and confidence in the institution.

Professor Paiko highlighted several of the university’s strategic initiatives, including the Abdulkadir Kure Centre for Basic and Professional Studies and the GreenTech ICT Hub, both aimed at promoting entrepreneurship and industry-relevant education.

He also expressed AKUM’s openness to collaborations with professional bodies, particularly media organizations, to further strengthen its impact and visibility.

Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of NUJ Niger State Council, Comrade Abu Nmodu, said the visit was intended to deepen the existing partnership between the university and the media.

He reiterated the role of the media in educating, enlightening, and informing the public, and noted the Union’s commitment to academic advancement through its ongoing programmes at the International Institute of Journalism (IIJ), located at the IBB Pen House, Minna.

Comrade Nmodu assured the Vice Chancellor of the Union’s continued support for the growth and development of the university.
